VOTE for PEACE

Image: Worldwide Moment

Part art, part activism: Worldwide Moment is a photography project for peace. Once per year we organize the world community to stop and celebrate peace by taking photographs of their simultaneous worlds. Currently we are honored to be a finalist for a $10,000 online vote-based grant.

I have been organizing Worldwide Moment with very limited resources, yet it’s grown to a group of 3,500 Facebook members, 1,000 Twitter followers, and I’ve seen citizens from more than 20 countries participate. This is not my job. But I treat it like like it is because I believe in the power of this idea.

Will you register and vote for us to win this grant at www.ideablob.com/5550 ?

Idea blob icon

We have brought this idea so far with so little. Imagine what we could do with $10,000? Build a multi-language website to educate world citizens about Worldwide Moment; provide cameras to international supporters; reach out to schools, churches, non-profits, and influential people around the world.

I’ll be honest, we are the underdog right now in this grant contest. We’re down by about 150 votes at the time of this writing. But I believe in this idea because I believe in the power of art, community, and cooperation.

Your vote for Worldwide Moment is a vote for peace. And please — feel free to re-post this on your own blog and invite others to vote.

Guest Blog: Chinako Miyamoto (111 Days Remain)

polaroidweekday2We all fall into one of these categories: people we know (friends, family, and acquaintances) and people we will never know (strangers).

I often wonder what kind of world we could live in if I could reach a thousand strangers and ask them to consider choosing peace over destruction, freedom over captivity, compassion over antipathy. I can’t say whether the world would be a better place, but I hope that it will, at the very least, start a conversation.

Worldwide Moment is a conversation starter. The project begs a simple question, “Will you join us in a moment of peace?” The instructions are simple: take a photo at 09:09 AM on 09/09/09+09GMT.

I remember after seeing the photos and reading the stories from the last Worldwide Moment, my heart was bursting with joy, knowing that so many people from all corners of the world wished for peace. In that Moment, I felt infinite.

As you pledge to participate in this project, know that you are committing to talk about a more peaceful world. Whether you are taking a photo in Uganda in the dead of night or in Japan when the sun is just starting to reach the highest point in the sky, I cannot wait to see the world through your eyes.

If you’re still reading this, tell your friends to participate. Walk up to a stranger, and ask him or her to join us. Set your alarm.

May the next Moment find you well.

About the Author: Chinako Miyamoto believes in social justice, random acts of kindness, and living simply . It is much easier to be behind the camera than in front of it. Chinako works in higher education at a Catholic women’s college and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Her photographs can be viewed at flickr.com/chinako

Yesterday’s Mini-Moment (118 Days Remain)

We’ve posted photos from yesterday’s Mini-Moment, our 20th time doing it this year! I found myself at my mom’s house near Dallas, Texas. We were in the process of cleaning out some of my dad’s old junk. So the activity was cleansing, as was the thought of everyone out there who was participating.

Here’s the link to yesterday’s photos:

Today’s Mini-Moment (126 Days Remain)

Each week we’re hosting Mini-Moments: simultaneous photos taken at the same time as the big one in September. They serve as practice and get you in the habit, so that by the time 09.09.09+09GMT@09:09 rolls around it’s second nature ;)

Today’s Mini-Moment, and every one from here on out, occurs Tuesdays at 8:09PM East Coast Time. Check here for your local time:

http://bit.ly/3eRce

Then stop for a moment and take a picture with people around the world. You can submit your story and photo to worldwidemoment@gmail.com and then view the collection at the Worldwide Moment flickr.

EVERYONE is welcome to participate. It’s a fun way to spend a moment on a Tuesday evening (if you’re in the U.S.) or a Wednesday morning (if you’re in Australia).

Welcome!! (128 Days Remain)

I’ve spent the past ten years behind the camera. And WOW, is it terrifying to be in front of it!

This is me, Brett. Today, right now. At 05.04.09+09GMT@10:04…

Howdy

I’m sitting at my home/work station in Virginia (where I spend entirely too much time), preparing. I’m 30. I’m single. I don’t have any kids. I have one parent remaining and no siblings. I’m the creator of Worldwide Moment. I don’t get to see 80% of my friends as often as I’d like because they live out-of-state, or out-of-country. And I wish I cared about something or someone more than I care about this project. Life would be so much easier.

For those who don’t know:

Worldwide Moment is an international arts organization which encourages people around the world take photographs simultaneously in celebration of peace and collaboration. And this is our blog. 128 Days before Worldwide Moment 2009.

This is our third year hosting WWM. Our first was in 2007 at 12:34.5.6.7 (12:34pm, May 6, 2007). Our second was 08.08.08+08GMT@08:08, (August 8, 2008 at 8:08am in the +08 GMT Time Zone).

Our 2007 event found approximately 62 photographers from 9 countries to participate. Our 2008 event found 269 photographers from 21 countries to participate. And this year we want to find at least one person from every country to participate. From my research that means 192 independent nations can represent.

To organize this ambitious Moment we need your help. Remember, Worldwide Moment is open to EVERYONE. So that means you can tell EVERYONE.

There are 128 days remaining. Will you help us by:

1) Signing up here (A more fancy email sign up page will be coming soon).

2) Telling your friends about us on FacebookTwitter, email, and… in person???

3) Submitting your ideas to: worldwidemoment@gmail.com

We’ll be posting every day. New ideas. New supporters. Photographs. Articles. New ways to get involved. Etc., etc., etc. Blog, blog, blog.
